Chili, chili, chili!

PenguinWhat more can we say?  With temperatures across the nation hitting all time lows, how else to beat back the chill than a chili cook-off?  With the Syracuse Winterfest, Feb.13 to Feb. 23, 2014 just around the corner, it’s time to show ol’ man winter that we’re made of stronger stuff around these parts.  Not only do we like to go outside in these crazy low temps, we like to eat really hot and spicy chili too!  Freezing on the outside, burning up on the in – that’s just how we like it!

With area restaurants competing to win the People’s Choice, be sure to come out and watch these talented chefs stir up some fabulous pots of yum and decide for yourself who’s got the best chili in Syracuse!  Cooking it up on Saturday, 2/22, the Syracuse Winterfest Chili Cook-Off is a must not be missed event.

To help get you in the mood, be sure to stop in at the Thornden Park Chili Festival Feb. 8, 2014. Help raise funds for the Thornden Park Association, and sample 4 different chilis, corn bread and home brewed root beer!  From 12:00 – 3:00 PM, volunteers will be serving up the good stuff at the Field House, best accessed at the Ostram Ave entrance, near the E.M. Mills Rose Garden.

If chili is not your thing, then how about a steaming “cuppa chowda?”  The Saratoga Chowder Fest, Feb. 1, 2014 is a delicious way to thumb your frozen nose at the raw temps outside, and enjoy other Central New Yorkers undaunted by the dip in degrees.  And of course Syracuse will host its own Chowder Cook-Off, Feb. 23, at the Winterfest.  Sponsored by Syracuse’s Updowntowners, be sure to vote for your favorite – cream based, or Manhattan style?

If all this talk of hot food and freezing temps has you hankering for all that winter can throw at you, then hop in the car and head to the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival, Jan., 31 – Feb. 9, 2014. This 10 day event features frying pan throwing contests, winter golf, Paul Smith’s CollegeWoodmen’s and Woodwomen’s exhibition, Chocolate Festival and Ice Palace and Fireworks.  It’s amazing what you can find to do in the middle of winter and the middle of nowhere!

Be sure to share photos and selfies of your cold self enjoying any one of these truly wonderful events.  Bundle up, embrace the chill, and be sure to let us know how much fun you had.  We’ll be right here, snuggled up by the fire.
